- A variety of trees are available and priced according to trunk size (years in the ground) and development stage. See pictures of each tier below the descriptions. Limit of 10 total participants.
- Tier 1 (1-2 years post-dig, future shohin or slightly larger): $66/person. 5 available.
- Tier 2 (1 year post-dig, larger trunks so larger final designs): $127/person. 3 available.
- Tier 3 (3-years post-dig with annual pruning to get foliage closer to its XL trunk, styling now within reach): $385, 1 available.
- Tier 4 (4 years post-dig, styling and deadwood carving already started and potted in a tokonama pot. XL trunk. Now this tree needs continued pruning to develop foliage pads and select branch lines where desired): $660, 1 available.
- Bring Your Own Boxwood: $30. 3 available.
- Participants choose between various wild-collected yamadori boxwoods. These landscaping shrubs make for great bonsai due to their small leaves but it takes some careful pruning to get them reduced in size while surviving the operation. Using trees dug in the past 1-4 years, you will learn how to prune them with confidence to promote backbudding and airflow as well as how much foliage is okay to remove. We can also advance into wiring and deadwood techniques if time allows or discuss those ideas for future stylings.
- Students should bring bonsai tools and wire if available. Loaner pruning shears can be provided as well as wire, wire cutters, manual deadwood tools etc if needed.
Public/Private Bonsai Workshops Menu Available by Request
Past workshops I have hosted are displayed below. I have the educational and physical materials to repeat these classes, but in some cases may need time to source a few items before we can do the class. Prices vary based on # of participants and are cheaper for larger classes. Other factors include whether it is a public or private class and whether there are any fees associated with the venue/ticket hosting service. Contact me to discuss any requests!
- Intro to Rock Slab Outdoor Bonsai Creation, Pruning, and Care (for 10 students/plant materials = ~$42/student).
- Learn how to repot, prune roots, mix your own muck, select a suitable rock, marry the rootball to the rock, top with moss, and care long-term for this unique style of "slab rock planting" bonsai. Slab rock plantings more than most styles exude a powerful, rugged tree in nature at any size due to the visual impact of the rock. I will also provide basic information on how to propagate from cuttings, and style via directional pruning, and how to wire branches if desired. All students receive 1x outdoor-suitable bonsai tree; choice of suitable slab rock for planting on, pre-mixed muck for binding the roots to the rock, moss, wire and twine if needed to tie the tree to the rock, and a printed handout of the key lessons to care for and maintain your bonsai and how to replicate this method in the future. Expected time 1-2 hours.
